Long ago on the plains of Texas, a herd of buffalo roamed. With shaggy brown fur, a long tail with a tuft of hair at the end, dark brown eyes, and short black horns…. These buffalo were easily recognizable as fierce, strong creatures with gentle souls.
This herd was a very serious group. They were always focused more on migrating than having fun... At least all but one! This young buffalo looked like the others in the herd but there was always something different about her and everyone knew it. She was playful, carefree, and had the desire to wander and see the world. This young buffalo always dreamed of having the courage to venture out on her own, but she knew it would mean leaving the herd she was loyal to.
One day while the herd was out grazing, a storm began to roll in. In the midst of bad weather it is common for buffalo to charge towards the storm head on. This allows them to quickly make it out to the other side. As the herd was barreling through the rain, the young buffalo heard a whisper. The wind was calling to her. It was saying “Keep running. Go further. There is so much more to see.”
By the time the young buffalo stopped running, it was too late. She was now dry, in an unfamiliar area, and all alone. She began to panic. She had never been further than a few hundred yards from her herd. How could she survive on her own? How was she supposed to find her way back? As worry set in, she felt a twinkle in her eye. She quickly found her way to a pond to look at her reflection… In the clear blue water there she was with a sparkle coming from her newly transformed blue eyes. Her eye color was beginning to change. Was this transformation from the experience of being on her own?
The young buffalo suddenly had a moment of clarity. She was overcome with a feeling of confidence. She had always been different, and this was her chance to find the adventure she had always dreamed about. She knew she was strong and could find her way back to the herd. But she needed to believe in herself.
